Enrollment is either in April or in October. The main language of this program for classes and research instructions is English. Basic Japanese language courses are offered at Center for Globalization. Research and Educational Fields Science Department: Physics, Chemistry, Earth and Environments, Biological Sciences Mathematics Department: Mathematics, Applied Mathematics New Frontier Sciences Department: New Frontier Sciences Applied Chemistry and Biochemistry Department: Applied Chemistry and Biochemistry Materials Science and Engineering Department: Materials Science and Engineering Mechanical System Engineering Department: Advanced Mechanical Systems, Intelligent Mechanical Systems Computer Science and Electrical Engineering Department: Computer Science and Communication Engineering, Frontier Technology for Energy and Devices, Human and Environmental Informatics Civil and Environmental Engineering Department: Environmental Conservation Engineering, Environmental Management and Planning Architecture Department: Architecture and Environment Planning, Building Materials and Structures Number of Students for Admission: up to 5 Financial Aid Financial aid of about 70,000 per month for the first year of the program will be awarded to some applicants whom the selection committee recognizes to have excellent records. Extension of the financial aid is possible after a review process. Qualifications of Applicants 1) Nationality: must have a non-Japanese nationality. 2) Education: Applicants must fulfill any of the following conditions from `$ to c$ `$ Hold a Bachelor s degree or are expected to complete the degree at a Japanese university by September 2013. a$ Completed or are expected to complete 16 years of formal education outside of Japan by September 2013. b$ Completed 15 years of formal education outside of Japan and are recognized to have excellent academic records by Graduate School of Science and Technology (GSST), Kumamoto University. c$ Are recognized by GSST to have attainments equal to or higher than university graduates, and must be older than 22 years old as of September 30, 2013. Note: When one s application is based on b$ or c$, the qualification will be subjected to the prior screening. For application to the prior screening, follow the guidelines shown below. . 3) Health: must be in good physical and mental health. 4) Language: must have a good ability of English communication skills. The applicants should have an official score of either Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), Test of English for International Communications (TOEIC), or International English Testing System (IELTS). The preferred minimum scores are 530 for TOEFL-PBT (71 for TOEFL-iBT), 700 for TOEIC, and 6.0 for IELTS. In the case of applications based on the qualifications 2)-b$ or -c$, the prior screening is required. Fees and Tuition Application fee: 30,000 Enrollment fee: 282,000 Tuition: 267,900 per semester (535,800 per year) Selection Procedure 1) The selection committee will examine the application materials and the result of the interview. Applicants should have interviews by a prospective supervisor and at least two more faculty members from the related field(s). When interviews in person are not possible, the applicants should have at least nine Internet interview sessions by three faculty members (three sessions each). Interviews must be completed by the application deadline. 2) The University will notify the selection results to the applicants in mid July 2013. Date of Enrollment October 1, 2013 Degrees After successful fulfillment of the course requirements, Master of Science, Master of Engineering, or Master of Philosophy will be conferred. The deadline for receipt of applications and all supporting materials is June 10, 2013. Required Documents 1) Application Form for IJEP in Graduate School of Science and Technology, Kumamoto University. 2) Health certificate completed within 6 months prior to the date of application. 3) Statement of objectives written by the applicant. It should include reasons for application to GSST, how the applicant qualifies to be a graduate student, and the applicants academic, research, and professional goals. 4) A certificate of Bachelors degree (or a certificate of anticipation of completion), or a copy of a diploma. 5) Official transcripts of academic records in English from each college and university attended, including information such as GPA and ranking. 6) English summary of a Bachelors thesis or an equivalent. An interim report is acceptable for applicants who have not yet graduated at the time of application. 7) Official certificate of citizenship (original and English translation). A copy of the passport cannot be accepted. 8) A letter of recommendation from a head of the faculty or graduate school of the applicants home university. 9) A letter of recommendation from a professor or a research supervisor who can evaluate the applicants ability in study and research. 10) A letter from the employer indicating agreement of this application, if the applicant is employed at the time of application. 11) An official score of TOEFL, TOEIC, or IELTS, if the applicants native language is not English. 12) Results of interviews including comments from the interviewers. In case of Internet interviews records of interview exchanges are also required.
